Understanding fundamental trade-offs in nanomechanical resonant sensors

چکیده

Nanomechanical resonators are used as high performance detectors in a variety of applications such mass spectrometry and atomic force microscopy. Initial emphasis nanomechanical resonant sensor research was on increasing the sensitivity to level single molecule, atom beyond. On other hand, there where speed detection is crucial, prompting recent works that emphasize sensing schemes with improved time resolution. We first develop general modeling framework encompassing all resonator tracking currently use, by extending previous work. then explore fundamental trade-offs between accuracy three architectures, namely feedback-free open-loop approach, positive-feedback based self-sustaining oscillator, negative-feedback frequency-locked loop scheme. comparatively analyze them unified manner, clarify some misconceptions seem exist literature, unravel their versus characteristics.

Understanding Dissipation in Nanostring Resonant Sensors

We have used optical drive and detection to study dissipation in silicon nitride beam resonators. We are able to tune resonant frequency as well as quality factor in a given nanostring resonator by several hundred percent by tuning the stress in real time, providing a unique look into the sources of dissipation for this class of nanoresonator. A record room temperature quality factor of 390,000...

Fundamental Resource Trade-offs for Encoded Distributed Optimization

Dealing with the shear size and complexity of today’s massive data sets requires computational platforms that can analyze data in a parallelized and distributed fashion. A major bottleneck that arises in such modern distributed computing environments is that some of the worker nodes may run slow. These nodes a.k.a. stragglers can significantly slow down computation as the slowest node may dicta...

Fundamental trade-offs generating the worldwide leaf economics spectrum.

Recent work has identified a worldwide "economic" spectrum of correlated leaf traits that affects global patterns of nutrient cycling and primary productivity and that is used to calibrate vegetation-climate models. The correlation patterns are displayed by species from the arctic to the tropics and are largely independent of growth form or phylogeny. This generality suggests that unidentified ...

Cloud and Cache-Aided Wireless Networks: Fundamental Latency Trade-Offs

A cloud and cache-aided wireless network architecture is studied in which edge-nodes (ENs), such as base stations, are connected to a cloud processor via dedicated fronthaul links, while also being endowed with caches. Cloud processing enables the centralized implementation of cooperative transmission strategies at the ENs, albeit at the cost of an increased latency due to fronthaul transfer. I...

Understanding Task Design Trade-offs in Crowdsourced Paraphrase Collection

Linguistically diverse datasets are critical for training and evaluating robust machine learning systems, but data collection is a costly process that often requires experts. Crowdsourcing the process of paraphrase generation is an effective means of expanding natural language datasets, but there has been limited analysis of the trade-offs that arise when designing tasks. In this paper, we pres...
